The CyberFirst Adventures course for Year 1,2,3 students gives you and your family the opportunity to see how studying computer science could potentially enhance your career prospects. Students must be 11 or 14 years old (born between 1st September 2004 and 31st August 2007) on the first day of the course.
CyberFirst Adventures is a free one day development course aimed at students in year 1,2 and 3 who have not yet made their National 4/5 choices and their parents/guardians.
The course is designed to showcase the varied roles and jobs that both exist and involve the use of technology in the workplace, to enthuse and inspire the participants into an interest in technology. It is also designed to counter the stereotype that computer science is a subject that only leads to jobs in programming and coding. The course is aimed at students who have not yet made their National 4/5, so that they get the opportunity to see how studying computer science could potentially augment and enhance their future career prospects.
As students GCSE choices are often made in conjunction with their parents/guardians, teachers and careers advisors, the course is designed to involve these adults too, so that they can see the benefit of students studying computer science, as well as how positive a mutual experience it can be.
Each CyberFirst Adventures course consists of four themed modules offering interactive, hands on, self guided, exploratory learning that reduces the amount of time spent in traditional instructor led presentation to the very minimum.
The four career based themes covered are:
Module 1 – Digital Detective
An exercise in digital forensics using analytics and date sorting to combat the spread of an infection disease.
Module 2 – Go Create
Attendees learn how to use HTML, CSS and advanced image searches practices to customise a website sites and create fake news.
Module 3 – The Data Games
Using a set of sports results, attendees must use data analysis and logical thinking to identify patterns in the data and create the perfect team.
Module 4 – Crack the Code
Attendees must work together in large teams to solve cyber security puzzles, crack passwords and unlock a range of devices before the countdown timer runs out!
