Age range is 8-11.

Jonathan Hare is a physicist, science communicator and television presenter. He was one of the first people to make and extract C60 Buckminsterfullerene, the football shaped molecule, and was one of the presenters on the BBC Rough Science series.

These sessions require the participant to watch a video prior to the workshop and bring along questions and queries (on the contents or beyond) to put to Jonathan for investigation in the session.

A Scientist’s View of the Universe
How do we know where we are and how do we know what we know? This will be a whirlwind tour of some astronomy, physics and a little Chemistry, to try and account for as much of what we know about our place in the Universe as we can in an hour.

Plenty of opportunities for Q & A’s.

Friday 19 June
Euler Laws & the Platonic solids
This session requires the participant to download five nets to be printed, cut-out and glued to form the five platonic solids (print each out as big as possible on to the A4 sheet).

Solar Balloon – up and away with hot air
Here we investigate how to make our very own hot air balloon that will work on solar heating rather than by burning gas heating the air by some other method. Using cheap bin-liners & Sellotape, we will design a large Dodecahedron shaped balloon to take to an open space and rise on a string …

Radio
We will explore the wonderful world of shortwave radio with a tour of my radio room and some demonstrations…… we will also get to see the Rough Science saucepan radio in action.
